Somebody said that New York is one Big DisneyLand for adults. Maybe, that’s why its nick name is Big Apple (just my theory).
If you secretly wished to experience some of the aspect of the saying, here I can guide you through.
Have you ever felt that you are subject to age discrimination when you tried to ride that small slide in the playground of your neighborhood where there is a sign saying no living soul over 13 or something similar?
Now today, forget about your big multiple sighs and big sagging disappointments around that playground.
Just visit the New Museum in my neighborhood, Lower East Side.
http://www.newmuseum.org/
There, you can experience the Carsten Holler exhibition until January 15th, 2012.
You can ride a Big Sci-Fi slide that’s piercing through three stories of the building. Of course, no worries about age discrimination. You can ride a shiny merry-go-round with pride (no shame, thinking of your age). Sci-Fi alien Santas will greet you with space ships and you can walk around with a big sci-fi helmet that will distort your vision upside down.
Don’t dispair around the playground in your neighborhood any more. Be happy at the New Museum. The Artsy Sci-Fi Playground will await you in the shiny silver armor.
Have Fun!! And Greet 2012 with futuristic ideas~~ ^^
Halloween is near. But New Yorkers’ costume party has already started from this weekend, along with the New York Comic Con festival.
Tons of younsters and superpower hero/heroine enthusiasts flocked together in groups to see who is attending to show off their super power this year. Some of them may not be living in the city. But the heck, Who cares? As long as you are here to make your presence, you’re part of the community.
Spotting some of these half-naked super heroes and Roman soldiers walking by on the street of LES (half way down in Manhattan) at chilly night was a big secretive amusement for a person who was a part of the super-hero group during the day.
Why don’t you join the festival next year? You’d better hurry. It might take a whole year to develop such a cool persona.
Have you ever secretly wished to have a cool taciturn guardian angel with special abilities nearby, protecting and saving you from evil forces?
If you haven’t seen any in real life, then see Ryan Gosling in Drive.
A loner with a sensitive soul. Immensely suppressed anger with pure childlike innocence. His melancholy teary eyes contrast his skillfully firm grip on the steering wheel when he drives to protect his amorous connection. You’ll feel that you can lean on his firm back without much worry.
As you can guess from the 60-page-long final script reduced from its original script which took 6 years in development, there is very little dialogue, other than the characters’ succinct or non-verbal communications.
I feel like today I rediscovered Ryan Gosling and Director Nicolas Winding Refn. Ryan was handsome, charismatic, and sexy in Drive, unlike the first time I saw Ryan in person at the Blue Valentine screening from last year (don’t get me wrong, Ryan. I really like the movie, your performance and your witty conversations after the screening. I think you are handsome, charismatic and sexy in real life as well). At the last year’s screening, Ryan was to me like a guy living next door. When I saw him in person, he didn’t show off the movie star vibe. He was friendly, nice and seems like a compassionate easy-going next-door neighbor. I think He shines more on a big screen, then on he’s like a true star. In that sense, he is a good actor to me. It was also interesting to hear how they all got involved in the first place. Ryan Gosling got involved first with the movie script and called Nicolas to persuade him to join when the director was in LA, unhappy and high on fever reducing drug (?) he got from Harrison Ford. And then, much later Carey Mulligan called Nicolas to work with him after seeing the director’s next movie clips. Nice job, guys. A cool movie and a cool director.
All of sudden I wanted to check out Ryan Gosling’s other films, so I decided to go and see “Crazy, Stupid, Love” this weekend. And I’m gonna watch “The Notebook” again because I just realized that he was the main character in that movie, which I loved when I first watched and thought was the best romantic film. Are you that romantic and sensitive in real life, Ryan? ^^
Go and meet your Guardian Angel. Drive is not Fast and Furious. But, way cooler.
My heart is beating fast. Why is it so loud?
The sound becomes a higher pitch. KKwang, KKwang, KKwang…
I open my eyes. Where am I now? I try to turn my head a little bit, the blurry vision in front of my eyes becomes a bit clearer. 8:00AM? What?! It’s still dark out. Is it raining? It doesn’t sound like it. It’s very quite. Damn! I’m late.
I kick off my blanket and dash out to the living room. There, my parents are watching a morning news on TV. As I try to glance over the TV screen, a 6-month-old tea-cup baby yorkee rushes to my feet showing off her avid tail wagging skills she recently acquired. “Mong-Mong-A” I call her name and stop to pick her up. While I am patting her on the soft and delicate forehead, I hear the news anchor’s anxious voice, talking about the Korea’s serious economic condition. He’s reporting that once-formidable big corporations like Daewoo have unexpectedly filed for bankruptcy and many people have lost their jobs and many more are expected to lose their jobs. The exchange rate has been fluctuating and the whole country might be on the verge of bankruptcy, he said. He mentioned something like “moratorium.” The anchor ended the news, by saying that the Korean government is now urgently asking for international funds from IMF. “Moratorium?” ‘What is IMF?’ The words briefly flash through my mind. At that moment, my parents started to talk about our next door neighbor, Mr. Park, moving out of their house because he unexpectedly got laid off from his work which he once thought to be his permanent workplace to retire from. His family used to have a very comfortable life style, but now it seems like he has nowhere to fall back on.
Passing by the gloomy conversations, I run to the bathroom to be ready to leave for school. On the bathroom mirror, I see my long hair all messed up. It looks like some monk went through a severe desert storm all night long. Oh, I now remember. Yeah. I was severely tipsy last night, but managed to wash my hair before I go to bed because my hair had weird stinky alcohol smell from the bar and the bus. Ah. Was that because of the economy? Nowadays I see a lot more drunk office workers in the street and in the bus, drunk and passed out, some puking. Unusually a large number of drunk men with white shirts and neckties on the bus last night too, I thought. It’s been definitely more so recently…
“I’m leaving~” My mom yells back behind my back. “Pick up an umbrella at the door. A big storm is coming! There will be lots of rain and wind this afternoon.” Storm? It’s unusual around this time of the year. On the way out, I see a moving truck on the road outside my house. That must be Mr. Park’s. What will happen to him, his wife and his daughter Jin? She’s just 14 now. Now my mind goes to different directions. If all those companies go bankrupt and there is no more secure jobs left, then what’s going to happen to my future? My father is gonna retire this year and I’m gonna graduate from college early next year. What’s it gonna be like? All of sudden, I feel a big chill in my spine. I definitely see that the big storm is coming in my way. Perfect. It’s very quite in the air this morning. The Storm is coming.
It’s dark at night. Where am I? Feels like somewhere in a city, on top of a tall skyscraper. I see some other tall structures around. I think I’ve never been here before. It’s weird. Eerie quite… What is this? Very itchy on my back. Something is moving. Ahh.. My arm cannot reach. It’s getting more itchy now… What is that light over there? Dim, but really beautiful. I see colors. Let’s wave. Oh, funny. The light is responding to my wave. I now see more lights from other buildings now… Is that a reflection? It’s moving as I wave. I should fly now. This is the time. Something’s beckoning from afar. I think I’ve never done this before. But I really should. I got my wings now. I can fly. Now! Fly.
All of sudden the buildings seem to be positioned in strange angles.
Ahhhhhhhh……. Strange. I don’t hear my scream. What is this sound? It’s really loud.
Kung. Kung. Kung. Kung….
How many movies you keep thinking about after waking up next morning and days after that?
Not many deserve that kind of credit. It could be the story. It could be the character. It could be its relevance to your life.
F1, Brazil, racing, legend… Nothing much in common with myself. But felt so much from this one documentary film. What a magnificent life. What a legend. And what a loss.
If you did not see this movie, you should go watch it yourself. You’ll be inspired. How is your life journey going? Can you match Senna’s?
They are waiting for the smell of blood, and then will sneak into your territory to bite off a huge chunk of your flesh. If you watch “Jaws” from 70′s again , you will feel a chill in your spine and know how terrifying it is to feel that some creature is lurking in the dark space below to come and eat you alive. ooooohhhh~~~
In this heat of the summer, you don’t have to go too far to dip your feet in the cool ocean to feel the chill of such predators. In fact, they are everywhere in the city, watching every move you make and every misstep you take. They are just waiting for you to get close and show them the smell of blood.
Sharks in the city? What the hell am I talking about? Isn’t it temporary insanity from the heat wave? Have you ever watched ABC’s “Shark Tank” by any chance? If you have, you would know what I’m talking about. Obviously. it’s not temporary insanity. Venture capitalists and a bunch of angel investors (somebody gave them this cute name^^) with lots of money are waiting for a next victim to show them the blood.
And of course, so-called victims are desperate and money hungry entrepreneurs. Whenever they are getting weary after a long struggle for cash or they want to make a fast-forward in the competitive market segment, they usually start looking for sharks, with some benign expectations that sharks will shower them with sweet cash, not with their sharp teeth. Entrepreneurs wish that their dream of sweet cash might be able to decay the sharks’ sharp teeth and make them dull somehow. Well, some might say ‘dream on’. Sharks are sharks. They will sharpen their teeth everyday and will have enough money to go to dentists to check their teeth secure.
While watching “Shark Tank,” I was amazed by how many entrepreneurs become vulnerable in front of money, actually in front of blood-hungry sharks. Upon certain pressures and influence, they give out a big chunk of their flesh disguised as company shares and hand over their babies to sharks, wishing that sharks will take care of them better than themselves. How about you? Are you willing to give out your flesh and dreams, in order to make bigger dreams? Are you ready to deal with the sharks? Me? Not sure yet. If I am, then I would be in a much stronger suit.
Check out this video. Two shark friends of mine, Art Chang and Shelly Palmer, are talking about the current trend of startups which sharks are waiting to devour. Although it was broadcasted last year, the message still has some resonance in this current.
Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton and Matthew Lewis were here in New York tonight to talk about their last Harry Potter series. They grew up well, compared to their young and innocent cute smiles we first witnessed from the first Harry Potter. Especially when you see Matthew’s heroic finale, you’ll see what I mean by ‘they grew up well.’ At the last scene shooting at the movie set, they were all feeling emotional, by realizing the reality that the moment would be the last that they would ever be on the same set together (except in a remake 15 years later, of course jokingly) (despite their cinematic separation, Emma and Rupert could be together later in their lives for real, I feel^^). Emma said she doesn’t desire to quickly jump to another role to become another character as an actress. Instead, she wishes to be remembered by people always as “Hermione.” It’s a great honor to be her and to be remembered as her. She says. All others sang the same note. They also showed their desire and passion to produce their own movies. Way to go. Please, fill this world with more good stuff we can all enjoy as we all did with you guys over last decade or so. Enjoy the moment and see you again at the theater.

A new fantasy drama based on real stories (well, sort of ^^).
A story about crazy adventures of a girl coming to New York City from South Korea, with nothing but big dreams. Big dreams, but her reality in the big city is not that dreamy. The girl’s glitzy New York City fantasy prior to her arrival turns into a hard-to-overcome reality that puts her into fantastical adventures for survival, which eventually leads to a dream-come-true success.
